Introduction
IHP Research Fellow Yi-jen Chang (1930–2009) arrived in Taiwan in 1949 where he earned his master’s degree from the Department of Chinese literature at National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1959. Chang joined the IHP in 1961 and was promoted to Research Fellow in 1992. From 1975 to 1983, he acted as head of the History Division (now History Department), and following his retirement in 1999, was reappointed as an Adjunct Research Fellow. During his tenure at the IHP, Chang also served as a professor at the Department of Chinese Literature at NTU and the Department of Chinese Literature at National Sun Yat-sen University. Specializing in the collation of historical documents—such as Guoyu and Zuo zhuan—philology, and ci poetry, he edited Guoyu yinde (Index of Guoyu) and authored Guoyu xuci jishi (Function words of Guoyu), Guoyu Zuo zhuan lunji (Collected writings on Guoyu and Zuo zhuan), and Huajian ci lunji (Collected writings on ci poetry of the Huajian school), among others.
The fonds of Yi-jen Chang includes research cards and notes on Guoyu, Zuo zhuan, and the ci poetry of Nalan Xingde (Nara Singde, 1655–1685), as well as lecture notes and examination papers, among which the marginalia including his interpretations and annotations is of immense academic value.
