While collating the research materials and personal documents of Research Fellow Kan Lao (1907–2003), the Archives found a graduation photo of the Department of History at National Taiwan University, signed by the graduates on the back with the inscription “To be kept by Prof. Chen-i,” the courtesy name of Kan Lao. This photo was taken in front of the administration building in 1956. Considering that all of the women are wearing qipao rather than graduation robes, it was likely taken to memorialize the graduation banquet held in appreciation of faculty.
Known faculty in the first row starting from the left are as follows: Shou-kung Li (first), Hsiang-hsiang Wu (second), Yun-ping Yang (fourth), Kan Lao (fifth), Kuei-yung Chang (sixth), Tsung-wu Yao (seventh), President Ssu-liang Chien (eighth), Kang-po Shen (ninth), and Tsung-tung Li (tenth). Among the graduating students in the second and third rows, one can note Academician Jing-shen Tao.
Here we thank Jung-tzu Wang, Shan-i Lu, Hung Hsu, Jing-shen Tao, Chia-i Lin, and Nan-chih Chen for their assistance in identifying the above figures in the photo.
