Originally preserved for administrative purposes, the Archives contains information on other institutes of Academic Sinica. In 1943, for example, Academia Sinica submitted an annual report to the Ministry of Education, detailing the Institute of Sociology (IOS) with its twenty-one research fellows under Director Meng-ho Tao (1888–1960). Contents include information on specific researchers, such as economist Pao-san Wu (1905–1999), economic historian Fang-chung Liang (1908–1970), Yu-hsin Peng (1912–1995), and modern historian Erh-kang Lo (1901–1997), as well as the research being conducted, including Ming dynasty gazetteers, official salaries, taxation systems, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and modern financial history. At that time, there was a certain tension between directors Tao and Fu Ssu-nien regarding the divisions of research between the IOS and the IHP; therefore, these preserved reports may offer a window from which to better understand contemporary academic planning and developments.
For more on this tension, see Pan Kuang-che, Leaks of Academic Masters (Taipei: The Commercial Press, 2021), pp. 83–90 (in Chinese).
