The Archives is in possession of two recordings on disc of Ding Wenjiang’s (1887–1936) lecture titled “Scientized Constructions,” totaling 18 minutes, which was first presented on Central Broadcasting Station on May 7, 1935, and then recorded and released by Columbia Records. The lecture is followed by a brief introduction of Ding.
Ding was a well-known geologist and former secretary-general of Academia Sinica. The lecture, which was delivered at the end of his tenure, argues that the main issue facing China at the time was lagging production. To improve this area, the people must devote themselves to so-called scientized constructions. Concerning specific ways and approaches that could be implemented, Ding suggests that cost should not exceed the economic capability of the citizenry, executing procedures must have a standard based on priority, a unified authority needs to be established, and thorough research and design is required before acting.
