The Archives, IHP, owns seven versions, including drafts and later revisions, of Academician Dr. Ho Ping-ti (1917-2012)’s article titled “Revealing the ‘Causality of Major Events’ in Chinese History: Starting with the Reconstruction of the Historical Facts Surrounding the Mohists in the Qin.” It had been conventionally believed that the rise of the Qin was due to the successes of the reforms of legalist Shang Yang (190-338 BC). However, in his analysis of pre-Qin texts, Dr. Ho has indicated that Duke Xian of Qin (424-362 BC) collaborated with the Mohists to advance the military and political systems of the Qin, establishing the state’s political position. Shang Yang merely followed afterwards and developed these policies. Dr. Ho’s argument thus constitutes a significant contribution to related research, offering an alternative interpretation of the narrative.
