Following the IHP’s relocation to Taiwan where we were first located in Yangmei, Taoyuan County, the IHP cooperated with the local hospital, notably Drs. Huang Aye (?–?) and Gu Niangxing (?–?), in an effort to provide medical services to staff. From this period in our history, the Archives possesses numerous documents pertaining to medicinal and healing practices, including diagnostic methods, vaccination notices, individual patient records, and medical invoices. Taken together, these archival materials offer valuable insights into regional epidemics and diseases, local medical conditions, and treatment methods at the time.
Concerning the above doctors in particular, Research Fellow Ping-chuan Chang (1919–1997) recalls in his memoirs: “During our years in Yangmei, although it was a time of great difficulty, the simplicity, honesty, and hospitality of the local people made us feel as if we were at home. In particular, the two doctors who were commissioned by the IHP did not exhibit arrogance like the local scholars or officials, instead arriving by bicycle whenever they were needed. Not only was the cost of medication low, but there was also no consultation fee.” This anecdote speaks to their kind demeanor when caring for IHP staff and their families.
