The Archives has 81 aluminum discs in our possession that contain recordings of dialects from Jiangxi province, namely covering 42 distinct regions. These recordings, made from May to June of 1935, are the culmination of the surveys and research efforts of Drs. Yuan-ren Chao (1892–1982), Shih-feng Yang (1903–1989), and Fang-kuei Li (1902–1987), who conducted their dialect surveys across 50 locations throughout Jiangxi.
After the IHP relocated to Taiwan, Shih-feng Yang organized his fieldwork notes and analyzed other oral records provided by Xu Dehua (?–?) of Nanchang Normal University in Jiangxi. Using these materials as well as additional data collected in Taiwan, Yang realized his article “The Phonetic System of Nanchang.”
For more, see Shih-feng Yang, “The Phonetic System of Nanchang,” Bulletin of IHP 39, no. 1 (1969): 125–204 (in Chinese).
We invite any interested parties to have a listen to a recording of Prof. Xu Dehua reading a shortened versions of the will of Dr. Sun Yat-sen in the Nanchang dialect.
