The Archives, IHP , possesses a Japanese-language manuscript written in 1946 by Dr. Hsien Rin (1925–2007), a psychiatrist at National Taiwan University Hospital whose research incorporated clinical diagnosis and treatment as well as fieldwork. The manuscript documents one such psychiatric survey conducted in the Muzha area by a team from the Department of Neuropsychiatry at National Taiwan University led by Professor Tsung-yi Lin (1920–2010) and Dr. Rin when he was a third-year medical student. At the time, Muzha was a rural area with farming communities near the city. The survey encompassed five villages, namely Muzha, Zhangshu, Laoquan, Zhinan, and Zhongxing, covering a total of 888 households and 5,585 individuals.
The primary objective of the survey was to investigate the relationship between mental health and social environment. To this end, the team employed a strict census approach based on official household registrations. With the assistance of local village heads and physicians, the team conducted detailed inquiries and mapped the area, recording names, ages, occupations, residences, and educational backgrounds of household members to generate systemic statistical data. Beyond its medical findings, this manuscript serves as an invaluable historical record, providing a detailed reflection of the rural social structure of post-war Taiwan.
