Since IHP’s relocation to Taiwan, we have also conducted ethnological surveys of indigenous peoples in Taiwan, mirroring some of our work in Southwest China. In 1954, for example, the IHP collaborated with the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University to conduct a survey, led by Yih-fu Ruey and Hsi-mei Yang, of the Saisiyat in Hsinchu and Miaoli counties. The survey aimed to explore the processes of acculturation as the Saisiyat interacted with their neighbors. According to Yang’s reports, the IHP’s research project included taking physical measurements, photography, participating in ritual ceremonies, acquiring genealogies and ethnographic specimens, as well as conducting interviews via interpreters. The investigations covered aspects such as their economic livelihood, social organization, and customs and beliefs.
