Dr. Shu-chi Chuang (1920–2015), who received her doctorate from Keio University, was the first licensed female practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine in Taiwan. Affected by her husband and father both dying prematurely of cancer, Chuang decided to take up medicine, especially focusing on cancer prevention and wellness. In 1996, scholars Hsueh-chi Hsu, Shu-fen Liu, Shu-ya Chang, and Hui-min Lai interviewed Chuang to create an oral record of her remarkable life, culminating in Memoirs of Dr. Shu-chi Chuang published in 2011. The reprint, which has been published as of January 2021, now includes prefaces authored by Dr. Hsu, her second daughter Dr. Ching-fen Chuang, and Dr. Chiung-hung Chang, as well as various materials from the donation ceremony of Shu-chi Chuang’s archival materials such as records, photographs, and the remarks delivered by Director Hsi-yuan Chen of the Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures and by Director Jen-der Lee of the IHP.
